| Reverse Osmosis
(RO) |
DESCRIPTION
Reverse
osmosis (RO) is a separation technology that uses a pressure
gradient across a membrane to overcome the osmotic pressure of a
feed solution and transport solvent (usually water) across the
membrane. Typical RO membrane pore sizes of less than 0.001 micron
cause salts, ions, sugars, and other low molecular mass compounds to
be retained and concentrated by the membrane. Membranes used in
Exergy’s RO systems are manufactured from basic plastic polymers
using proprietary formulations and processing steps to engineer the
pore sizes depending upon the type of membrane desired.
FEATURES
Exergy selects and prepares membranes for enhanced performance. Some
of the important membrane properties are as follows:
▪ High-quality pretested membranes
▪ Exacting standards to ensure proper membrane size
▪ Spiral winding of separators using special fabrication techniques
▪ Quality tested using both salt and dye solutions
▪ pH range from 2 to 10
▪ High flux even at elevated solid concentration in the feed
▪ Proprietary pretreatment of membranes provides higher chemical
resistance and separation
performance
APPLICATIONS
Exergy’s RO systems provide superior quality and performance for
separation of water from dissolved solids. Typical industrial
applications for reverse osmosis include:
▪ Desalination of process and rinse water
▪ City water and process water purification
▪ COD reduction
▪ Recovery of specialty chemicals with the concentrate
SYSTEM COMPONENTS
The RO system is modular, automated, and skid-mounted. The system
includes high-quality, heavy-duty components:
▪ Spiral wound membrane modules
▪ Module pressure vessels
▪ Feed and pressure pumps
▪ Feed and discharge valves and piping
▪ Feed or process tank
▪ System instrumentation and control
▪ System electrical
